Indoor Air Quality
(IAQ) has become a
leading environmental issue. Studies have shown that the air we breathe indoors is
often more polluted than outdoor air and that 70% or more of all IAQ problems involve
Heating Ventilating Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Indoor pollution can cause
health hazards.
Headaches, nausea, nasal congestion,
eye irritations, allergies, sore throats, dizziness, drowsiness, chest pains, shortness of
breath, rashes, fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia, and malaise are
some of the symptoms which may well be related to the environment which you live and work.
The severity of these symptoms can in some individuals cause them to seek medical
assistance, and even hospitalization.
These symptoms can be cause by dirt,
dust, debris, tobacco smoke, animal hair and dander, insects, rodents, and other
contaminants which can also become an ideal breeding ground for pollen, mold spores,
mildew, bacteria, fungi, and other potentially harmful biopollutants accumulated in the
ducting and HVAC units and spread when the air is circulating.
The contamination can be identified by
moldy odors, visible surface mold or mildew, clogged or extremely dirty air filters,
clogged coils or drains, water in basements, cellars or crawl spaces, musty closets,
storage spaces, attics, moldy or damp carpets, excessive dust visible on furnishings or in
the air. If manifestation of any of these conditions occurs, there can be immediate
or eventual allergic responses which could possibly culminate in serious illnesses or
possibly even mortality, in extreme cases.
