The fundamental weakness of most spec scripts is the lack of a good story or structure. We take the guesswork out of your process byproviding you with a professional environment.

--The Sitcom Workshop

The Sitcom Workshop™ is now in its 7th successful year. Many of the writers have gone on to get agents and get a job on staff. They all say they are extremely well prepared for the job once they are hired.

Each week I book actors to read the scripts of the week around a table -- just like Monday morning on an actual network show. The readings are a great tool to help us hear a joke working or failing flat -- there is no better test than hearing that joke. After all the readings, I dismiss the actors and we (the writers) begin our work as we examine the scripts for story and character problems. We discuss it and FIND SOLUTIONS. Once the story is working, the table of writers will work on punching the script with jokes. You usually get 2-3 reads per 8-week session. Since I look for dedicated writers and interview everyone before they are invited into the group, I guarantee that all writers are professionally motivated.

If you'd like, you can also start a script from the beginning of the process by pitching out 5-7 ideas for an episode. We'll talk about your ideas and I'll suggest which story you should write. You'll then write a beat sheet and/or outline and we'll discuss that in class as well. After I sign off on your story, you can begin writing your 1st draft. After completing your last draft, you can then have your first read." Also, during the week between classes, you can always e-mail me and the class members your revised outlines and beat sheets in order to get feedback.

I bring my fourteen years of professional experience ("Roseanne," "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd," "Coming of Age," "Harry and The Hendersons") as a writer and a producer for television to this workshop and simulate the profession environment for the writer.

The class takes place on Saturdays from 11-4 (or longer, depending on the needs of the week). The session is 8 weeks long and the fee is $375. I interview candidates for the group and vacancies are filled as writers vacate their spaces. I keep the group at 10-12 writers. If interested in an interview, please fill out the easy-to-use SIGN-UP FORM.

If you're interested in the ADVANCED WORKSHOP, that group meets on Thursdays in the evening. The criteria for selection into that group requires the writer to have already been on staff have an agent in place already.
